Hematology

Program Overview

The clinical hematologist is certified to work in the hematology laboratory department only. The hematologist categorical national certification encompasses only the discipline of hematology.

The Institute of Integrated Laboratory Sciences offers a program to prepare individuals interested in only taking the categorical hematology national certification. The hematologist program is designed to provide clients with the knowledge base needed to pass the clinical hematology national examination.

 

Our highly qualified and experienced staff offer preparation in all aspects of clinical laboratory science including hematology, which encompasses, coagulation, hematopoiesis, laboratory methods in hematology, special hematology procedures, red blood cell and white blood cell morphology and disorders, platelets, quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement, and laboratory compliance.

Week 1: Introduction to hematology â€‹

Week 3: Cell cycle regulation, structure/function of hematopoietic organs 

​

Week 4: Cytokines/growth factors, differentiation of blood cells

​

Week 5: Hemoglobin, lab math, QA/QC

​

Week 6: Fe metabolism & Leukocytes

​

Week 7:Hemostaisis

​

Week 8:Basic hemostasis testing & coagulation instrumentation

​

Week 9: Disorders of hemostasis, heparin therapy & specialized testing

​

Week 10: Review and Exam

Week 11: Megakaryocytopoiesis, thrombopoiesis & abnormal RBC morphology  

​

Week 12: Bone marrow procedure and examination

​

Week 13: Hematology of the newborn

​

Week 14: Anemias & macrocytic anemia 

​

Week 15: Thalassemia & Normocytic anemia 

​

Week 16: Reactive abnormalities of leukocytes, coagulation & laboratory compliance  

​

Week 17:Myelodysplastic syndromes

​

Week 18: Myeloproliferative neoplasms 

​

Week 19: Acute leukemias/Lymphoid neoplasms  

​

Week 20: Flow cytometry, review & final
